Looks like I am in the minority on here but, other than cost of housing and the homelessness, which is the same all up and down the coast, I think this is a wonderful place to live. I personally think Coos Bay is pretty great. Make whatever decisions you think are best for you, but ignore all the crap you hear about this place. The weather is nice, the nature is close and beautiful, and the people are honestly warm, welcoming, and amazing. Treating it as some sort of toxic site that can't be saved just breaks my heart. I'm always trying to recruit younger, progressive-minded people to come here and help with the effort. However, I've felt safer here than anywhere else I've lived, and I've made it my mission to settle here because I want to help rejuvenate it. It is a socioeconomically depressed area, which was hit hard by the diminishing support of the timber and fishing industries, and yes, a lot of poorer people here have started to suffer from mental health issues and substance abuse as a result. I get really pissed off at the constant assertions that Coos Bay is some sort of hellscape with rampant drug use and crime. I've lived and worked in Coos Bay/North Bend now for about 7 years, and we recently bought a house, and are settling in and planning to stay here for the rest of our lives, honestly.
